Obama: 75,000 people at Portland Rally!!!

I don't believe this but The Page says it is validated by the fire chief in the city of Portland.

Folks, Obama is more popular than NFL football, which averages about 68,000 a game on Sundays. My prediction of 60%-40% over McCain in November might be on the money. And anyone who scoffs at this....just remember, 40%-45% of people who can vote, don't. Obama isn't only shooting for traditional voters, he is shooting for this much larger pool, about 80 million people, of disaffected voters. I'm not kidding at all when I say we could be witnessing the end of the Republican party.

This is called taking your country back.

http://thepage.time.com/2008/05/18/obama -gets-largest-crowd-to-date/

Just for grins... Wikipedia says Portland has an estimated population of ~568K people. That's 1 out of 8 people in the WHOLE FREAKIN' CITY, with more waiting to get in.

Confirmed: The largest rally in presidental primary history was in Portland today.

I think this is more commonly known as the "balkanization" of Europe, where everyone splits up and into their own little factions, smaller and smaller, comprised along ethnic or religious lines and the like.

Don't a lot of people go to the big Obama rallies (2.00 / 1)

to check him out?

Seems like the two are still pretty close.. in votes.. Obama and Hillary

I remember going to a HUGE Dukakis rally in the Bay Area a few decades ago... right after the tank attack ad came out.

Dukakis may have been the Dem nominee but... how many of us think that was a good choice now?

He was probably the best choice among the people running, which doesn't say a lot.

The DLC's candidate that year was Gore.  We saw what an awesome campaigner he turned out to be in 2000, with the benefits of incumbency no less.

Dukakis was a good candidate and would have been a good POTUS.  Unfortunately, he ran a shitty campaign with bad advice and got beat.  Lucky for us, we did that part in the primary season this time.

Obama supporter here.  It's hard for me to read your diary with your signature line proposing a Republican VP, in line for the presidency.  This is no reflection on your diary, just as a Democrat I don't get why anyone would risk having the government turned over to the GOP again.

Re: your "Obama supporter" first line... (none / 0)

Mady - no problem - I'm simply looking forward to the day when we don't have to qualify ourselves as "C" or "O"...just "D" will do fine.

I posted something similar to this on another site - the jist of it is that forever back in the mists of pre-internet elections, the party had factions - you just didn't come in contact with very many people who felt passionately one way or the other - now with sites like Kos and MyDD - we come in daily contact (by choice) with folks who feel passionately and diametrically opposed to our points of view. That kind of conflict is realtively new - we're working through it for the first time...it will get better. Then, we can self-identify as Democrats first, and state our vewpoints (passionately) within that context alone.

Now, if someone can't make that statement (D)...they should go find another sandbox - this one's full of Democrats.

Looks like it was about 100,000:
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0 410/25/pzn.01.html

This doesn't take away anything from Obama, of course.  As we all know, the Clintons are fantastically popular in Pennsylvania, and Bill had just returned to the political scene after being hospitalized for heart problems.

If anything, I think it points to the fact that Bill probably would have won in a landslide if he could have run for a third term.  Unfortunately it was the comparatively uninspiring John Kerry who was on the ticket and, well...I'm looking forward to having someone who can inspire a lot of new voters to become politically active (and hopefully mend fences with all those hardworking Hillary supporters).

There are boats everywhere.  There wasn't enough room on the grass for everyone to stand so people watched from boats.

I was at an Obama rally in Atlanta early last year, and there was a turnout of about 20,000 there.  It seemed like an endless sea of people.  This is more than three times that.  I'm stunned.

Yes, it is wonderful to see so many people turn out.  Every American, on any side of any race, should be proud to see this turn out. It means Democracy is alive and of interest by many of our citizens.

And Obama has brought in a lot of new hearts, souls, minds and boots on the ground (or fingers on the phone.)   Young people getting engaged like never before.

But I'm not sure how many of them will remain engaged if Hillary manages some back-room deal to win the nomination.   It will just take the wind out of their sails and leave them with the feeling that you just can't win in politics.   No matter what you do, the insiders are going to come along and change the rules.

Re: Obama: 75,000 people at Portland Rally (none / 0)

You know what they say about enumerating chickens. eh?

Remember, those special election pick-ups were with a much smaller electorate.  They will have to be defended again in the fall with a full presidential race electorate in districts that trend strongly GOP.

As for your voting percentages - a little clarity would be helpful.  % of registered voters or of voting age population.  In 2004, those numbers were, respectively - RV 73%, VAP 56%.  In 1992, with three candidates and an intense level of interest it was 78% and 55%.  So, even though the percentage of those registered has risen, overall participation - as a percentage has not.

It is informative that in 1968, RV was 90% and VAP was 61%; however, that was prior to the 26th Amendment - 18 year-old voting - and when more difficult voter registration self-selected only the most willing voters.  By 1972, RV dropped to 80%, VAP to 55%.  By 1980, 77% and 53%.

http://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/

Since 2004's 56% VAP was the highest VAP since 1968 - the highest since 18 year-olds have voted, since the VAP has been consistently in the lower 50s throughout this period, what evidence do you have - other than a nice crowd in Portland - that this long-term and entrenched political trend will radically change?

I was thinking about this (2.00 / 2)

the mississippi congressional seat got 79% of the vote in 2004.  It was Trent Lott's seat.  It's been in GOP hands for 36 consecutive years.  before that, the seat belonged to a dixiecrat.  Lott was the Dixiecrat's chief of staff, that's how he got the seat, he inherited it.

this would be like the Dems losing Berkeley, in a special election.

Re: Question? (none / 0)

Are the majority of voters in Berkeley registered Republican?
Because in most Deep South congressional districts, they are.

That's one of the strange things about Southern politics.
At the local level the Dixiecrat Party still rules.
So party identification is bifurcated.
You have to be a Dem to get elected county commissioner.
It's only when you have bigger plans that you switch parties.

Obviously, the Goppers wanted to nationalize the issues,
but voters in MISS 01 chose to keep it local.

Very, very different than Berkeley.

The crowds at Obama rallies are truly impressive--people from all walks of life, all demographic groups. He is a leader who inspires us to be a better, more united nation. Most politicians talk about what they want to do when they are elected-- he talks about what we the people will do together with his leadership. Obama really can transform the electoral map-- moving beyond the slice and dice politics of the past couple of decades.

I know because 75,000 people being enthused about the political process and a political candidate is SO deserving of mockery.

I really enjoyed this post, the comments and the music video post (hadn't listened to it lately).

But wouldn't it have been more appropriate at Dkos?

I spend more time there as an Obama supporter, and I didn't see this there. I don't think you should post this sort of thing here right now.

thanks for the post (none / 0)

unfortunately, it still attracts people on both sides who feel most comfortable barking and snipping at each other.

more posts like this, and how we can fight mccain, and perhaps mydd might turn out to be an interesting site again.

Re: Obama: 75,000 people at Portland Rally!!! (none / 0)

It's a great day to be Barack Obama, or one of his supporters. All he has to do is outwork an old and tired McCain. Anyone notice that Obama hardly ever gets off task for too long, states his points and moves on. Carrying out his message to the people, this is why he is so likeable and electable. As more people get to know him, more people will jump on the bandwagon.Expect more rallys with this kind of turnout.

Wait until the General campaign...
Contrast the numbers Sen. Obama will pull to the numbers Sen. McCain will pull.
People are tired of feeling isolated in the reality of 8 years of Cheney/Rove Bush.
Obama allows people to be a part of something bigger. Folks that have attended and will attend these look around and say "Damn, there sure are a lot of us."

Re: Obama: 75,000 people at Portland Rally!!! (none / 0)

And that "something bigger" is exactly what?

People who attend these rallies are a bunch of 20 somethings participating in - the latest pop culture fad?  Or is it like an American Idol contest where they get to vote for the winner? Or is it a religious cult worshipping the latest incarnation?

Get Real.  We're electing the leader of the free world.  I find it pathetic that people believe in this.

I challenge you to go to Portland and say that to the face of the people who attended.  All 75,000 of them.

Re: Obama: 75,000 people at Portland Rally!!! (none / 0)

Yep. Sure is pathetic a new generation of voters are taking an interest in their government and joining together to work to make our country better.

Your comment reeks of bitterness and ageism. Sorry to break it to you, but the under 40 demographic that Obama continually pulls actually do things like have jobs, pay bills, own property. Your attempt to stereotype these adults as stupid children is pathetic and speaks a lot about your own issues.

I'm told I shouldn't call our candidates (none / 0)

assholes anymore (note the new name). But whenever someone says I'm part of a cult, I feel like giving them a true analysis of the psyche of our candidates.

What are you a nihilist? (none / 0)

You left out an option for consideration: a movement for real democracy and transparency in our current politics energized by a combined opposition to the destruction the Bush Administration has levelled on our country.

I wonder what you would say were this a CLinton rally?  Or are you turned off by inspiration in general.  How about all of those anti-war rallies, civil rights rallies, and womens' rights rallies conducted throughout our nation's history?
Were those just as pathetic?  I'd consider this movement to be just as important, getting rid of the corporatism/facism installed by our current president

Re: Obama: 75,000 people at Portland Rally!!! (1.50 / 2)

Doesn't mean diddly-shit.  Lots of people got behind really bad leaders in the past.  The number of people showing up at an event has nothing to do with proving honest and sincere leadership.

Look at past history.  It's an insincere measure.

Re: Obama: 75,000 people at Portland Rally!!! (none / 0)

What I pointed out is that large crowds don't prove anything.  Check back in history, and notice that many huge crowds gathered behind leaders that should not have been.

Anyway, the diary and its title attempts to make us believe that the number of fans qualify a candidate.  I just disagree.  And also, I don't know why my last post got troll-rated just for expressing an opinion.

No abuse in it whatsoever, just an opinion given.

You folks should lighten up on your TR's here, please.
