So if you call Obama black, you're a racist because you're using the "one drop" rule.

Like Tiger Woods, Obama has only one black parent. Woods will not refer to himself as merely black because, as he told Barbara Walters "that would be like saying my mom doesn't exist."

So we can't call Obama black.

So let's call him biracial. Oh no, say some of you. That's racist:

When you try and tell us Obama is only 6.25% black, and use terms like bi-racial as some kind of wedge in the black community, don't be surprised if you are called a racist.

Moreoever, asking "how is referring to Obama as 'biracial' proof that one is racist?" Will earn you three troll ratings.

So you tell me. What is the proper term to use when referring to Obama's race: black, white, biracial, what? Should we never talk about race? When talking about Hurrican Katrina, should race ever be mentioned?

Are we like Stephen Colbert now, who says "me, I don't see people in terms of color. People tell me I'm white. I really wouldn't know."

When reading or listening to something you also have to consider who it is saying it. not just what they are saying. Words do not exist in a vacuum, the context in which they are delivered and the speaker are all part of the message. If you want to be considered seriously by a given community you do not spend a bunch of time speaking against that community, then say something that might be true and expect everyone to go all "ooh ah" over what you say.

Yeah, you know "biracial" would not seem to be a racist term. So, why did you create a whole new diary to complain about how you are being treated by a minority of a given population? Address it in the thread it was raised.

Can I legitamtely start a diary and use you as a prime example of a given group? "You know supporters of X candidate are all stupid because Y poster said this".

Really, this diary makes you sound petty and whiny, not the most effective way to get people to take what you say seriously. Perhaps you are trying to go for the martyr route? "Wah, look how mean these people are, their candidate must truly suck because they don't treat me with respect".

You seem really concerned with determining just how far you can go in criticizing our party's nominee.

If you spent half that effort going after McCain rather than figuring out "acceptable" ways to attack Obama, you might actually gain some support for your comments around here.

BLACKENED CATFISH (CAJUN STYLE) (none / 0)

Cook outdoors: 1/2 lb. (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted.

SEASONING MIX:

3/4 tsp. white pepper
1/2 tsp. thyme
1 tbsp. paprika
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. onion powder
3/4 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. oregano
2 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. red pepper (cayenne)

Preheat cast iron skillet on outdoor-cooker at least 10 minutes, until a white ash forms in skillet bottom. Thoroughly combine seasoning mix in a small bowl. Dip fillets in melted butter so that both sides are well coated. Then sprinkle seasoning mix generously and evenly on both sides of fillets, putting it in by hand.
Place in hot skillet and add 1 tablespoon of butter over the top of fillets. (Caution - butter will flame.) Cook 2 to 3 minutes on each side until charred. Serve with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

Serves 6.

Obama refers to himself as Black, so I'm not really seeing the point of this diary.
But to answer your question, no, I don't think the term bi-racial is racist, it's biologically accurate. However, my kids are biracial, and I consider them, and teach them that they are Black.
It's not to discount their father, but socially, they are considered Black.

Tiger Woods isn't a really good example of how Obama should define himself, since Tiger Woods obviously has a problem with Black identity, and does not want to be considered Black, or really have anything to do with Black people.

His race should not be given any more credibility in regards to his abilities than his shoe size. It should not carry any weight in and of itself, and when you're discussing policy, it's not part of it.

You can call him whatever you like, just don't treat it as if it carries some sort of meaning in and of itself other than a novelty. And ESPECIALLY don't use it to insist that his positions contradict his stated goals/ideals.

are voting that they do not see in color. I thought we got rid of that cheesy guilty white liberalism years ago. Please, Obama sees in color. He called his grandmother a "typical white woman". He wrote a book in which he spent a lot of time talking about being black. He talks about it all the time on the campaign trail and his campaign specifically targeted blacks in states where there is a heavy population and his campaign said that he would win those states because of the demographics, for example, SC.
My kids are the most open minded people I know when it comes to race. Their father and I raised them that way, but they see in color.
In fact claiming not to see in color is racist in and of itself. Why refuse to see someone's color unless you think there is something wrong with it? Why pretend that growing up black is exactly the same experience as growing up white?

I will not vote for him, but if other people trust him and through their trust of him start to trust other political figures, and start to feel empowered, and Obama does not destroy that trust, then good.

of color, for that very reason, because studies have shown people of color feel the judicial system is for the white people, not for them.

It's not saying ALL people of color to not feel included the same systems, institutions. But the perception is there among many people of color, and who could blame them? We are a visual species, and even in California, judges remain overwhelmingly white and male.

The first thing people notice about someone they are meeting for the first time, is their race. This also applies for ethnic differences if the person is clearly of an ethnic group. The only people who don't register color are blind people. We could learn from the blind when it comes to skin color.

The internet is the great equalizer. You don't know whether the person you are conversing with is black, white, red, yellow, or some shade of blue or green.

Of course, the first thing that registers in my consciousness when meeting a new person is their skin color or race. The second is the facial features. That's how the human mind works. That doesn't make me a racist any more than noting a woman's beauty makes me a sexist. It's a natural reaction.

Noticing racial differences isn't the problem. Acting on those differences is where we so often go astray. Judging someone on their skin color is no more right when it is black judging white than it is when it is white judging black.

Congratulations to catfish for managing to inject race into the campaign. I wonder how many McCain points he'll get for this one?

Noting racial differences isn't the problem. Stereotyping people with a broad brush, based on somebody's skin color is a problem.

Bacause the hope is that if enough voters can be turned off by emphasizing his race the election will swing to McCain. The flip side of that is that there are a lot of people who like the idea of electing a qualified black man to help move us further down the road towards true equality. Even a lot of Republicans and conservatives feel this way. Some of them feel that affirmative action is wrong, not because it gives preference to someone unlike them, but because it is seen as a type of reverse-racism that implies those getting preference are somehow less equal.

ok i posted the same comment on another thread and I post another version of comment in this thread.

nuff of this racebaiting.. calling a person biracial isnt racist.. someone said why label at all.. well here is a label.. "old and deranged" and "wheels coming off" how are they for labels? IMO isnt racist.. geez w/e call me racist and I will show what real racism is.. here is an example..

I am of mixed color, and AA is not one of those colors. recently I went to pizza hut.. an AA server took care of us.. treated us like dirt.. gave us an undercooked pizza and when we protested.. she told us that was the way pizzas are made in america..

the irony was she was calling the lady on the next table maam.. offering her excellent customer service.. apologized for an undercooked pizza and told that she will replace the pizza.. and repeatedly treated her with utmost respect.. and guess what.. she was an african american lady..

now dat to me is racism.. dont overload the term racism when people equate a thin resume to inexperience.. obama is biracial.. deal with it.. however, he is more right than wrong compared to mccain on issues important to me and thats why I support him.. not because he is experienced! or has different color.. get a grip.. dont call people racist.. when the real racists are selling buttons making "whitehouse" jokes in texas, you accuse ordinary folks of being racist..

He can even make an ad in which he claims to have passed a law giving vets health care, when in fact he didn't even show up to vote for siad law, he's just being aggressive. He's being a man.

But if a woman makes a tiny tiny error in one incident in which the helicopter she was riding had to make a corkscrew-style landing because they feared snipers in the area, though no snipers turned out to be there, is embellishing to an unforgiving degree.
